Our media center aligns with standards set forth by the American Library Association. The ALA calls for schools to have a library media program that is flexible and provides equitable access to all students and staff.
Our library program plays a big part in our educational setting. Students, teachers and the school librarian are all able to collaborate and become partners in learning. The classroom teacher and school librarian plan together, create lessons together and carry out those activities together. In doing so, students are more engaged, the content is covered thoroughly, and many resources are being used.
The school media program allows for students to have open circulation during all school days. Students may visit the library anytime to check in/and library books as needed. Students also have a set time to check in/out library books. They come during the latter part of their technology class during specials each week. However, if a need arises and students need to check in/out more than once a week they have the ability to do so. This cultivates a culture where students are learning to be independent, be responsible and take ownership of their own learning.
The school librarian works to ensure that students and staff members have up to date, adequate resources to use. The book collection is analyzed and maintained periodically. After being analyzed, new books are added and old books are discarded from the collection.
Our media program would not be successful without the many grants we have received. We are so very grateful for our community partners who have provided monetary donations to provide supplies, technology, items for our Makerspace area, books, and other resources.
The WMES Library Learning Commons is a place to learn, create, read, collaborate, communicate, listen and grow. Our media center provides endless opportunities for students to be successful!
